GROWING A BETTER TOMORROW with STEM
STEM has become a common acronym for the fields of Science,Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM Education attempts to transform the typical teacher-centered classroom by encouraging a curriculum that is driven by problem-solving, discovery, exploratory learning, and require students to actively engage a situation in order to find its solution.
STEM NS addresses the labour needs of tomorrow by encouraging the development of the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians (STEM) required to build excellence in Nova Scotia’s knowledge-based economy. The STEM NS initiative will encourage more young people to pursue meaningful STEM careers and will build the next generation of innovators, entrepreneurs and problem solvers. The initiative will encourage a focused and coordinated effort to promote, advocate, and educate fellow Nova Scotian’s on the importance of early STEM educational experiences.
Through the outreach projects of STEM NS we will generate funding to support and infuse STEM rich learning opportunities at Bedford South School and beyond as a means of encouraging children and youth to enroll in STEM studies.
Objectives
1. Encourage more students to pursue further education and careers in STEM,
2. Develop a STEM talent pool,
3. Develop student confidence in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics,
4. Develop positive student attitudes about the STEM fields, and
5. Improve student understanding of the business of science.
The intent of this project is to create a sustainable and reproducible program that could easily be implemented in another school setting within Nova Scotia to generate awareness and education using the documented turn-key resources and tools available through www.STEMNS.com
